My Story
April 01, 1997- Arriving home from an exhausting high school varsity soccer event, I wanted nothing more than to grab a quick snack out of the fridge and head to the shower so I could tackle hours of homework that sat in my book bag. As I rounded the corner to the kitchen, I noticed my dad sitting in the shadows under our breakfast nook light. He sounded as if he was sobbing.
"NO- NOT MY DAD!" I thought to myself. My rock, my strength. What could possibly have him so upset? As I stopped and listened from a distance, I heard him explain to his mom on the other line, "Yes... doctors are certain it is cancer, but they won't know until the surgery how aggressive it is. Yes... brain cancer...."
The surgery occurred, the results came back... grade 3 astrocytoma. Chemo, radiation, surgeries, numerous seizures, and LIFE CHANGE! As with many forms of cancer, it comes back... and with a vengeance! This time, grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme.
As I watched my dad change from being a quick-witted, MacGyver kind of guy to a dependent, helpless soul, one thing never changed- his determination to do more and prove cancer wrong.
On March 9, 2002, nearly 5 years to his date of diagnosis, Rick Moore, gained his wings and soared high.
Although his physical presence is gone, his legacy of courage, strength, and determination to prove cancer wrong still lives on!
Will you join me in this fight- to find a cure for cancer? For the month of May I will be logging miles as I train for a marathon, and for every mile I run, I will be donating to the Dragon Master Foundation. This foundation does more than raise awareness for brain cancer, it is determined to find a cure for brain cancer through the power of BIG DATA.
As one, we can only accomplish small things, but together, we can concur the world!
